050 on intake or exhaust because remember there is over lap and do not go below 108 lobe sep either. So as for picking a cam I would suggest not go over 214 duration at. btw this is on my 71 c-10 with goodwrench 350. So in short I should have bought the 1406 instead of the 1405. So I called edelbrock and they told me this information. I know this because I was trouble shooting why I couldnt get the carb to tune as well on my stock mild engine. So even if you match the jets and metering rods springs etc the carbs still wont be the same. the 1405 is more for performance and even performer rpm applications. The carb #1406 you have has slightly different emulsion tubes and boosters than the 1405 carb the 1406 is made more for mild applications like tow rv cams and torque grinds. not tooting my own horn just trying to help. Hi I am new to this forum but I have alot of experience on this matter including two years automotive technology school. Plus, who wants to be a poser and have a kickass sounding idle with nothing to back it up?! I'd rather have something that doesn't raise eyebrows and then blow their doors off when you drop the hammer!

I too wanted a badass sounding motor that rattles windows at idle, but i decided it was better to have something that was better matched to the rest of the parts I had purchased for my build. 050, and will have a little lope to it, but will give me a lot of torque and a broad spread of power. I had the same choice to make when i bought a cam, and ended up buying a Comp Cams '4x4' cam for my 454 from their extreme energy line. I just thought about the thumpr more for that mean sound at idle but I just want it to run good and be reliable.Īnd keep in mind, I wasn't trying to bash the thumpr cam, it's just you'll have to make a decision on what is more important - sound at idle, or driveability and performance. So do those Summitt cams seem like good quality stuff? Thanks for all the input guys. Unless you have everything else to match the cam, happiness is often a smaller cam. If it was my truck and was mostly stock (exhaust, gears, etc.) I would lean more towards their 60101 cam. He is no longer with Lunati but says that the voodoo line "really works". He then formed his own company called Ultradyne Cams, and from what I have read, he is a "cam designing genius". He designed cams for Comp Cams back in the 70s. It seems that a guy named Harrold Brookshire is the one who designed them. I've done some research on the new Voodoo line of cams from Lunati. If you have 4.10s and a 2500 stall convertor it would work a lot better. It will sound bad ass but will have wasy less low end torque than your stock cam. I think that thumper cam will be disappointing in daily driving where most of your time is spent under 2500 rpm.

So any cam with more lift than that won't be able to reach its full potential. Produced nice power with the old factory fuelie heads. For 79 the heads are PROBABLY 882s. I really liked the sound of the old XE274 flat tappet that I had in the Impala. Not sure of Groucho's customer demands, but a roller cam retrofit set up may be out of the budget. It's a roller cam that still works well with stock to light stall with mild gearing. I would personally go with the XE272HR in a stock 350. My dad went that route because he put it in a stock head(pressed in studs) crate engine. I don't recommend the flat tappet grinds. The rollers are actually designed from scratch to get the sound, but going rollers reduces friction which adds more power anyway, so it's a trade-off. The flat tappet Thumprs are actually repackaged circle track cams, so it's designed for midrange and upper rpm power. The biggest downside is not really being able to set the timing correctly. (vid below) It's mainly a no-go showboat anyway, so it works for him. My dad got the smallest flat tappet one for his 350 in his 56.
